The price of tea in China

There’s an interesting poll over at Titus 2:3-5 this week. ET’s food budget has been through the roof, and she’s wondering if the price of groceries in her area is comparable to others.

Our primary method of keeping the grocery bill low is by shopping at a discount grocery store. There’s a great one here that sells mostly organic goods. We take our list there before we go to the “regular” grocery. I’m not so good at remembering how much things cost (or anything else, for that matter), so I’ve enlisted some help from Rockford and our friends Don and Carrie in filling out this list. Carrie is a CPA, so this is probably pretty darn accurate.

  • A gallon of milk … $2.50 at the “cheap store” or $3.89 at the regular store
  • 5 pounds of potatoes … $4 at the regular store, on sale
  • Price per pound of … apples, 99 cents at the farmer’s market; oranges, $1.50 a pound (we rarely buy them because they’re too pricey); bananas 39 cents a pound at the cheap store, 69 cents elsewhere; grapes $1.29 a pound on sale.
  • A head of lettuce … $1.39 at the regular store
  • A cucumber … 69 cents
  • Tomatoes … 99 cents a pound at the farmer’s market, $2.98 at the regular grocery
  • 2 pounds of carrots … $2 at the regular store
  • A box of mac ‘n’ cheese … 99 cents on sale at the regular grocery
  • About a pound of frozen corn … $1.29 at the regular grocery
  • Two 1-pound “blocks” of coffee … $4 at the cheap store
  • 12 double-rolls of toilet paper … $7 on sale at CVS (regularly $11)
  • A pound of ground beef … $1.98
  • A pound of chicken … $1.98 (Sam’s Club and the cheap store)
  • A pound of pork chops … $4
  • A pound of butter … $3.30 at the regular store, $2.50 at Aldi
  • A package of cookies like Oreos … 99 cents at the cheap store
  • A can of beans … 59 cents
  • A can of diced tomatoes … 89 cents
  • A pound of spaghetti … $1.29

How does that measure you with your neck of the woods?

    1. Inflate almost everything by about 15%, and you’ve got the price of tea in Chicago. Even at Aldi’s! BOOO!!!!!!

My single, vegetarian friend who is tiny and doesn’t eat much in Omaha called me last night to complain that she shopped for groceries for two weeks and spent $150 at her regular grocery store.

    2. Geesh. This is the second time I’ve heard about Aldi. What is that place? And how do I get one here?!

Thanks so much for participating! You’re making me want to move to your neck of the woods.

      Blessings,
      Tyler

    3. The cheapest gallon of milk around here is at Target, for about 3.49. I haven’t seen it as cheap as you can get it in ages! And I’ll say it a million times to anyone who will listen: I wish we had Aldis on Long Island!

    4. When I moved to Cali I noticed everything was reliably 25-50% more expensive at the grocery store. We get as much as we can at Target, and look for sales. There’s a place called the Grocery Outlet that I should check out, but it scares me a little. We get most of our fruits and veggies at this tiny little corner shop called the “Produce Center” and it is always considerably cheaper than the regular grocery stores.

    5. There’s a Grocery Outlet near us, too, and we’ve only been there once. Pete was in the stroller, and he was nearly squashed in the checkout line by a Very Large Man who decided it was time to Back That Thing Up. Good thing I have reflexes like a ninja cat.

    6. I win! I win! $3.29 for a HALF gallon of milk, $3.49 for a dozen eggs, $2.99 for a pound of apples, $3.69 for a loaf of bread…SHEESH.

    7. Yes, I’m still here, but I’m driving out on Friday the 17th!!!! 🙂 I catch the ferry in Haines on the 20th and I expect to be back in Missouri by the 30th of this month. I am happy to report that I paid $3.96 per gallon at the pump yesterday. That’s the first time in over a year that the price has dipped below $4.00. Oh, and just in case…don’t let anyone you know believe ANYTHING good that they hear about Palin.
