On Thursday I sang in the car and ate chili with friends

I actually started taking notes about my day yesterday, but I only got as far as 9:15 a.m., which was when I started doing laundry. Riveting stuff. It’s just as well that I didn’t take copious notes, though, because it is Late o’Clock and I am very sleepy. So we’re just going to go over the highlights of Thursday.

Poppy had her very first math test. She made a 91 on it. She would’ve done better, but the little girl I babysit for a few hours a week arrived while Poppy was on the last page, and she rushed through those problems so she could go play.

Poppy’s first math test

Poppy had a piano lesson, during which she and her piano teacher sang a song about “the whale that ate the universe.” Not sure if they made it up or if it was a David Bowie B-side.

We played a game from Poppy’s math curriculum. She won.

I sang “What’s Goin’ On” by 4 Non Blondes on the way home from Poppy’s piano lesson. Not at the top of my lungs, though, because the kids always shush me when I do that. I neglected to tell you yesterday that on Wednesday I sang “When the Doves Cry” and “Nothing Compares 2 U” in the car. I’ll bet you wish you could ride around with me.

A day without Angry Birds is a day without … um … flinging a digital bird at a bunch of digital pigs, I guess.

Our friends Dave and Sandi, formerly of Missouri, drove many, many miles to eat chili with us. (And also they were vacationing in the area. But I’ll keep telling myself they’re here for the chili.) Poppy and Pete totally monopolized the evening until Rockford put them to bed. Then we reminisced until bedtime — we talked about you, Amy, and you too, Brook — when we made them go sleep with the cats. (We didn’t really make them sleep with the cats.)

On Wednesday I vacuumed all the things

If you had peeked into my house yesterday at 10:30 a.m., you would’ve found me sitting on the couch eating Sun Chips and reading other people’s Week in My Life posts while the kids watched a show downstairs.

And then I got Sun Chips salt in my eye. It was that sort of morning.

Sometimes I wonder if maybe the kids convene secret, middle-of-the-night meetings to decide how the next day is going to go. Sometimes they decide it’ll be perfectly lovely day, like Tuesday was. Other days Poppy might opt to be delightful while Pete is a pill, or vice versa.

They must’ve decided to make yesterday morning a doozy. Little cads.

On Tuesday I gave cupcakes to kids and was spoiled by my spouse

On Monday night I dreamed a panicky dream about money. I don’t remember specifics, but it was not enjoyable. Then when I woke up yesterday morning, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” was in my head for about two hours.

I don’t know whether the two are connected.

It ended up being a really nice day despite its kind of inauspicious start. It was crazy warm for the trailing end of October, and we had very few things to do outside of the house. That’s my favorite kind of day.

Cars in the morning

Yesterday morning was pretty much just like Monday morning, but with nary a muffin. After breakfast and computer time, Pete started an epic adventure with his cars. Poppy asked if she could join him rather than doing her spelling, so I let her play for about half an hour.

Much time was spent playing cars.
