The last busy weekend. (For now.)

It is possible that we have reached the end of our Season of Very Busy Weekends. Hallelujah, so say we all.

We were a house divided on Saturday, with Rockford and Pete journeying over hill and dale to attend a high school graduation and Poppy and I at the soccer fields for her marathon games. Rockford and Pete had a lovely time celebrating the Eldest Nephew; Poppy won three games and lost two and played more ferociously than I’ve seen her play all season; and I alternated between dodging raindrops and applying sunscreen for five hours of very odd weather.

Yesterday we were together again, and it was a rather nice day. We started off the day with another wild-goose chase to look at real estate for my dad — the road this house was on ended in someone else’s driveway, and when I emailed the realtor to ask for directions he said “Oh, you don’t want that house.” Later I followed Tyler Florence’s instructions for BBQ chicken, and Rockford and The Brother-in-Law Who Was Promised (aka my sister-in-law’s fiancé) pulled all the weeds out of our jungle-like flowerbeds and then we ended the weekend watching Bran ruin everything (Beware: The night is dark and full of spoilers).

Tonight is the first of four more evenings of soccer for Poppy, who is trying out for the top-of-the-heap team in her age group. Cross your fingers for her.

Monday: Hot ham-and-cheese sandwiches
It was going to be grilled-cheese night, but Pete, as Pete is wont to do, requested more protein.
Tuesday: Fish sticks and mac & cheese
My mom and the kids discovered their mutual love of fish sticks not terribly long ago, and now they want fish sticks and mac every time she visits.

Wednesday: Sausage alfredo
The sausage alfredo recipe popped up on either Facebook or Pinterest as an ad, and I thought it sounded pretty good. We’re going to give it a shot.

Thursday: Cheeseburgers
If we’re having cheeseburgers, chances are good that it’s Pete’s Choice night.

Friday: Pizza

There is no such thing as too many taco nights

Monday: Tacos
Yesterday was our mother-daughter book club meeting, and we had tacos and discussed “Esperanza Rising.” I made ground beef, chicken and a cumin-roasted potato and poblano filling for our vegetarian members. The veggie filling was by far my favorite. I also made an almond flan, which was tasty despite the opinion of all children present.
Tuesday: Tacos Deux
I was going to make spaghetti, but we a lot of taco filling left over. I may make quesadillas, but I’ll probably just reheat everything and call it Taco Night II: Electric Boogaloo.

Wednesday: Undecided
We’ll be celebrating my father-in-law’s birthday, and I don’t know what we’re having yet. He requested a Prinsesstårta, but I am never, ever making one of those again. #ItTraumatizedMeWhenTheMarzipanMelted&Globbed&TheCakeLookedLikeAnAlienBrain.

Thursday: Cheeseburgers
Pete has been campaigning for a cheeseburger night. I have finally acquiesced.

Friday: Popcorn?
We’ll be seeing the new Captain America movie sometime Friday. If we go around dinnertime, we may have popcorn for dinner.

Here’s my plan for teaching the children how to cook

We used to let the kids pick one meal every week, but we stopped doing that because Poppy almost always chose fish sticks and macaroni and cheese. Well, that alone isn’t the reason we stopped doing it, but it certainly didn’t help. I really don’t like fish sticks. Anyway, this week marks the triumphant return of Kids Choice Night, sort of. I’ve made a list from which the kids can choose, and all of the recipes on it are simple enough for them to make themselves:

Baked potatoes
Baked pasta
Shake-n-Bake chicken
Scrambled eggs
Grilled cheese
Sesame noodles
Tacos
Chili

They’re pretty basic dishes, and that’s because I’m trying to teach the kids how to cook. That way they won’t have to eat Taco Bell for every meal when they go off to college and I can slowly switch places with the children and play Super Mario Bros while they make dinner. In the past I’ve toyed around with the idea of putting together or purchasing a Cooking Curriculum, but the idea never really stuck. So we’re just going to dive in and make things that they’re interested in making, and hopefully they’ll pick up the skills they need as we go.

Last night was supposed to be our first Kids Cook Night, but the kids ended up going to a friends’ house and they didn’t get home until pretty late so Poppy didn’t get to make her grilled cheese sandwiches. Here’s what we’re having the rest of the week:

Tuesday: Sandwiches
We’ll be having a DIY sandwich bar. Any combination goes, as long as you don’t want anything other than ham, cheese, peanut butter or jelly. (That could go very, very grossly.)

Wednesday: Breakfast for dinner
Eggs, toast and veggie sausages. Nothing fancy this week.

Thursday: Tacos
Pete wanted to learn how to make tacos. Hopefully in a few weeks he’ll be in charge of taco night. (It may take longer than a few weeks.)

Friday: Pizza
We ordered from Domino’s last week, and the pizza they delivered was missing topping and it was doughy. We probably won’t be ordering from Domino’s this week.
