What I did on my winter vacation

After many, many years of posting in my year-end roundup that I had not left the country yet again, I will finally have a different answer at the end of 2020. I went to Mexico for the first time last month, and it was delightful.

Rockford and I have gone to the Shaky Knees music festival in Atlanta for the last four years or so for our anniversary. It’s a very well-run festival, there are food trucks everywhere, the lineup has been terrific every year, and it’s a pretty easy drive from our house to Atlanta. I’ve loved all of our trips there, but I’ve never come home feeling like I’d spent the weekend relaxing.

And so, as we drove home after last year’s adventure, I told Rockford I’d like to change things up and maybe go somewhere and sit on the beach and do nothing for a few days. He was willing to entertain the idea, but I knew he was disappointed because he loved being immersed in live music for days on end. And then a few days after we got home, Wilco — one of our favorite bands — announced that they were planning their own festival at a resort in Mexico. I forwarded the announcement to Rockford, who said “Well, you manifested this so we have to go.” And so we did.

I felt odd about it, so I didn’t talk about it much ahead of time. It was far more money than we’ve ever spend on a just-the-two-of-us vacation, and getting a passport just to go see one’s favorite musicians seems like crossing a fandom Rubicon. But I’m so glad we went. It was a lovely couple of days in a beautiful environment, and we actually came back feeling like we’d been on vacation.

Was it weird being on vacation with Wilco, Sharon Van Etten, Yo La Tengo, Calexico (and more!) and a bunch of music fans? Yes, a little. Would I do it again? Yes, in a heartbeat.

2019: A retrospective

It’s the All & Sundry year-end review!

What did you do in 2019 that you’d never done before?
Made bulgogi. And it was delicious.

Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Last year’s resolution was “to try to drink more water and stop drinking sweet tea.” I may have done OK on the water front, but I definitely didn’t slow down on the sweet tea. My goal this year is to try to feel more at home in my body.

Did anyone close to you give birth?
I don’t believe so.

Did anyone close to you die?
Almost. My mother-in-law had a very close call with an infection in September. She’s still recovering.

What countries did you visit?
Not a one.

What would you like to have in 2020 that you lacked in 2019?
A greater sense of calm.

What dates from 2019 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I don’t have a good memory. That’s why I blog.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I don’t think I accomplished anything worthy of fanfare in 2019.

What was your biggest failure?
Likewise, I don’t think I had any failures worth mentioning.

Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing major.

What was the best thing you bought?
I took a writing class in the fall through a local university, and it was a blast.

Where did most of your money go?
The mortgage, I think.

What did you get really excited about?
Watching “The Mandalorian” with Rockford and the kids.

What song will always remind you of 2019?
n/a

What do you wish you’d done more of?
Last year and the year before and the year before that I said more family hikes. This year? More family hikes.

What do you wish you’d done less of?
worrying

How did you spend Christmas?
At home with my in-laws. It was a nice day.

What was your favorite TV program?
I watched and enjoyed a lot of TV again this year. “The Good Place,” “The Mandalorian” and season 2 of “Fleabag” were great.

What were your favorite books of the year?
“Whiskey When We’re Dry” by John Larison, and “Circe” by Madeline Miller

What was your favorite music from this year?
Vampire Weekend’s “Father of the Bride” album and The National’s “I Am Easy to Find.” We saw Vampire Weekend live for the first time this year, and it was the most fun I’ve ever had at a show.

What were your favorite films of the year?
“Knives Out” was the best. I also enjoyed “Frozen 2,” more than I expected to.

What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
The kids had play practice, and Rockford and I met at a pop-up empanada restaurant for dinner. I turned 41.

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Fewer illnesses in the extended family.

How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2019?
I’m trying to incorporate a little General Leia Organa into my Mrs. Roper aesthetic.

The leftovers have left the building

We went to my brother’s house for Thanksgiving, and my sister-in-law came to our house to make dinner for my in-laws. (Long story). So we had a lovely Thanksgiving meal that we didn’t have to make, and then we came home to leftovers which we turned into meals for the rest of the weekend. I highly recommend this holiday tactic.

Now that we’re out of turkey, though, we have to cook again. Here’s what we’ll be eating this week.

Monday: Chili
Rockford made a huge pot of chili yesterday. We’ll be finishing it off tonight.
Tuesday: Chicken sausages and roasted vegetables
This one was on our eMeals menu for last week. We have roasted sausages and veggies relatively often, but we don’t always use butternut squash and Brussels sprouts.
Wednesday: Butternut squash Thai curry
Apparently it’s butternut week over here. This one’s from Chrissy Teigen’s website.
Thursday: Slow cooker chicken thighs
I’m not a big fan of chicken thighs, but other people currently dining at our table are.
Friday: Sandwiches
We’re having extended family over for a game night. I’m putting out deli meats and cheese, sandwich rolls, so on, and so forth.
