Chris is winging his way across the world this week, but I’ll issue the warning anyway: “Idol” talk ahead.
I hope someone sings “Islands in the Stream.” That’ll probably be tomorrow night’s group sing-along, though.
Brooke White, “Jolene.” I didn’t really hear it.
David Cook, “Little Sparrow.” He looks different this week. Closer-trimmed hair, maybe? A facial hair change? I can’t pinpoint it. Maybe it’s just that he’s wearing white. Anyway … he’s singing “Little Sparrow,” and I liked it.
Ramiele, “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind?” Rockford points out that she has quite the collection of jumpers. Dolly Parton loves her because she’s tiny. Her little ‘tude usually irritates me, but I tried not to watch her tonight. And I found that she has a nice voice. It wasn’t bad.
Jason Castro, “Travelin’ Through.” Please, Jason Castro. Cut your hair. Oooo! Bongos! This was a good choice for him. It’s kind of a breezy tune, and it fit his voice really well. Even if he doesn’t win, he’s going to have a future on the Guys With Guitars Circuit.
Carly Smithson, “Here You Come Again.” (I think that’s the name of the song.) She’s surprisingly enthusiastic about singing for Dolly. I wouldn’t have expected that. I’m not really a Carly fan, but this song was perfect for her voice. And she didn’t seem as desperate this week as she has in weeks past. For my money, that was her best performance so far.
(Simon’s being really unpleasant this evening. He hasn’t had anything nice to say about anyone. He told Carly she needs to have a word with whomever is dressing her. He seems extra-rude tonight.)
David Archuletta, “Smoky Mountain Memories.” Of course, Dolly also thinks Little David is an angel. He’s emoting the heck out of this one. Week after week, I think the same thing about him. He does have a great voice, but it sounds like he’s in a high school musical. Or on stage at Dollywood.
Kristy Lee Cook, “The Coat of Many Colors.” This ought to be her week. I like her “look” this week. It’s a little bohemian. Oh! But she’s not wearing shoes! Boo! The voice, though. This may have been the first week I’ve liked her. She definitely has a voice for country music.
(I think maybe Simon just doesn’t like Dolly Parton. “Baby Mama” might be funny. I like that Tina Fey.)
Syesha, “I Will Always Love You.” I’ll bet you a dollar Simon references the Whitney version. As well he should, because it sounds like she’s doing it Whitney-style. I like to sing this song, and Rockford really, really, really loves it does not even pretend to be amused when I do. Unlike me, Syesha has the voice to sing it. Dang, Syesha. That gave me goosebumps. The Dolly is bringing out good things in a lot of people I didn’t previously “get.”
Michael Johns, “It’s All Wrong, But It’s Alright.” So cute and nervous standing there with Dolly. She wants to write songs for him! That was darling. That’s a wacky ascot thing you’ve got there, MJ. I don’t love it. But I do love your performance tonight. Yow. That was … yow. And phew. Nice. That was an awfully sultry song.
Boy, so many people did a good job this evening. I’m going to say Ramielle’s going home. Watching the recap, she and Brooke seemed the weakest. And I like Brooke, so I’m hoping it’ll be Ramielle.
