In which I begin dating my husband again

Rockford and I have been married for nine years. We’ve been together for much longer than that, and we’ve known each other since dinosaurs ruled the earth seventh grade.

Project 52: Date Nights logo And you know something? I still like him. Quite a lot. Which is why I thought, “Hey! That’s a great idea!” when I saw the Project 52: Date Nights idea at Simple Modern Mom.

The premise is simple, in concept: one date every week for a full year. You pick a night and a time, set whatever restrictions you’d like and each of you take turns — a month at a time — planning the dates. The standard rules on the contract (yes! there’s a contract!) state that you should Look Nice. Which around here, I take to mean Don’t Wear Your Pajamas.

So again, pretty straightforward concept. Spend Time Together. Will it be so simple in execution? We’ll see. Because I signed up to do it. I should say we signed up to do it. Rockford is so entirely on board that he planned our first date:

1/52

  • Kids in bed.
  • Chocolate-covered strawberries.
  • Music.
  • A few hands of gin.
  • Even though I lost (429-278), it was so nice to turn off the distractions and spend some time together.

We’re going to try to go out for a date once a month, but most of our date nights will be at home, after the kids have gone to bed. In addition to the No PJs rule, we’ve decided that we can only do one movie night a month. So. Do you have any great ideas for inexpensive, at-home dates?

    1. We love playing cards! This is a great idea. Might have to try and learn gin together for a date night. 🙂

    2. I found a website, that has many “at Home” dates. Go check it out http://loveactually-blog.blogspot.com/
I also gave my sweetie a list of dates (about 30 of them) for Valentines. Below are a few.
Pizzeria Night. A saucy date night where we’re both the chefs cooking up some pizza masterpieces.
Tailgate party. He (or you) pick the game, have the tailgate party right there in the living room.
Chinese date. Order chinese, or make something… eat on the floor
Cosmic Date. a romantic evening under the stars in your yard
Twister date. How about a little childhood game of twister…
Fondue Night. You make me melt. You’ll be joining me this evening for a romantic fondue for two.
Game night. We’ll play old fashion board games from monopoly to Apples to Apples… and everything in between.
Romantic night at home. Drinks, candles, lingerie, enough said.
Dream vacation. Where have you always wanted to go? Lets plan a make believe vacation for two
Wii night. Chips, snacks and a little friendly compitition
Puzzle and chips. Time to work on a puzzle together, and of course have snacks
Dutch oven and a movie. Lets dutch oven here at home. Fire lit, dinner and a movie
Build a model. Lets pick up a model and together, we’ll build it.

    3. What a great idea. I like the one night out a month part, trying to coordinate a sitter every week would be insanity here.
How about baking cookies together as a date activity? Making fun sugar cookies and decorating them? If you have a Wii, you could have a Wii bowling night!

    4. Yay! I’m so glad you are joining us! I look forward to reading all of your dates. Cards… it’s so simple! Why didn’t I think of that? I used to play gin with my dad all the time. Such a fun past time. I’ll have to keep this in mind for next time I’m in charge. Thanks for linking and we’ll see you next Tuesday!

    5. Scrabble! We sometimes play it and Chris gets really annoyed when I beat him. He thinks he is SOOO much smarter than me:)

It is a great idea though. I like it. Also what about cribbage, or online euka! Wish we could play that with you guys. That was fun.

    6. I’m always a big fan of the game nights. I’m also a big fan of cooking together – perhaps you can plan some sort of dinner night where you can actually prepare it together after kids go to bed and have candles, wine, whatever suits your fancy.

I don’t know if he’s creative like you, but I also enjoy doing art or creative things together.

    7. Bananagrams. Like scrabble, but more fun. Also, Agricola is a great game even for two players.

Also, this may be a little crazy to try to do in your house, but scavenger hunt? I’ll bet you could find a list on the internet for an in-house scavenger hunt. You could work together but keep track of who found the most stuff, and then there could be a prize for the winner (back-rub?). Or, you know, just the back-rub, without the scavenger hunt.

    8. We love Rummikub and cribbage when it’s just the two of us. But our default is to watch either a movie or television show with popcorn and Coke.
