Food and nostalgia

Rockford and I were reminiscing this evening about some of the great meals we had in Columbia, MO, and he challenged me to come up with my All-Columbia Dream Meal. Somehow that evolved into a full day of eating. The rules allowed any food from any restaurant that had been in Columbia at any time when we lived there. And since we’re dealing with some places that no longer exist, we decided that the concept of “so full we could pass out” wouldn’t exist, either. Here’s what I came up with:

Breakfast

  • a stack of chocolate-chip pancakes from Peggy Jean’s.
  • two sausage patties from Cucina Sorella.

    Lunch

  • a bowl of gumbo from Emmet’s in Fayette.

    Afternoon snack

  • an Upper Crust chocolate-chip cookie and a Fitz’s cream soda at the Ragtag.

    Dinner

  • Blackened redfish with mashed potatoes and gravy from Glenn’s.

    Dessert

  • A Marie Laveaux sundae from the Savoy made with vanilla ice cream from Sparky’s.

    Late-night snack

  • A slice of pineapple-pepperoni pizza from Shakespeare’s.
  • And here’s Rockford’s list:

    Breakfast

  • Pancakes, eggs, sausage and hash browns from the Blue Moon Cafe.

    Coffee break

  • A latte with honey and sugar from Lakota.

    Lunch

  • Applewood-smoked ribs from Emmet’s.
  • Two burgers from Booches.

    Afternoon snack

  • A tall glass of Boulevard Wheat.
  • ‘Chokes and Cheese from Flat Branch.

    Dinner

  • Dinner salad from Abigail’s.
  • Bronzed pork chops and mashed potatoes from Glenn’s.

    Dessert

  • Hummingbird cake from the Savoy.
