- Monday: Pizza subs
- I don’t know why I keep writing this down as “pizza subs,” because it turns into Sandwich Night because only one person (Poppy) actually wants a pizza sub.
- Tuesday: ?
- Pete has basketball practice, during which my mom is going to stay at home with Poppy. I’m not sure if I’m going to ask her to make something while we’re gone or if Pete and I will bring something home.
- Wednesday: Twin Suns Toast
- We made Twin Suns Toast out of the “Wookie Cookie” cookbook a few weeks ago, and now the kids can’t get enough of it. It’s just two eggs cooked inside a piece of bread.
- Thursday: Baked ravioli
- Now that I’m writing this, I’m thinking I forgot to get ravioli. Hm.
- Friday: Pizza
- I’m planning to DIY pizzas this week, but I always have Dominos on speed dial just in case.

We’re very, very busy and we still have to eat
This week is going to be roughly 87 percent busier than normal. The kids are starting swim lessons again, my car will be in the shop for a repair for a few days, our new-to-us dishwasher is going to be installed and Poppy has her first-ever standardized testing this week, among other things. Which is all to say that my menu plan will be employing the CrockPot several times.
- Monday: Chicken Noodle Soup
- This recipe, from Better Homes and Gardens, uses cream-of soups, rotisserie chicken and frozen veggies. I’m hoping it’s as tasty as it is easy to make!
- Tuesday: Scattered family dinner
- Pete’s basketball practice runs pretty late on Tuesdays, so he and Rockford will be having a Daddy-and-the-boy dinner outing. I’m not sure what Poppy and I will be doing just yet.
- Wednesday: Chicken Curry
- This one is a Martha Stewart recipe for the CrockPot. I often find her recipes a little less flavorful than I’d prefer, so I’ll probably use a curry paste with a good amount of kick to make this.
- Thursday: Cheeseburgers
- It’s Pete’s choice week, which obviously means we’re having cheeseburgers.
- Friday: Pizza
- Last Friday we tried a pizza from Target’s grocery section. It wasn’t a frozen one — I guess you’d call it a “take and bake” pizza — and it was really good. That might be our pizza pick this week, too.
Do you have any great, simple meals for crazy days?
I don’t have to try not to breathe, Michael Stipe.
This weekend my head was so thoroughly congested that my teeth hurt, my voice echoed around in my head and I couldn’t taste anything. It drove me to Extreme Measures. I’ve been hearing lots of talk lately about the wonders of apple cider vinegar, so I Googled ” ‘sinusitis’ and ‘apple cider vinegar,’ ” and I found a number of recipes for hot beverages that were supposed to ease the symptoms of a sinus infection rather miraculously.
So I grated some ginger, added a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, a little cinnamon and a whole lot of honey and then poured some hot water over it and let it steep for a bit. I must’ve been wildly powerful, because I could taste it. It was a sharp and not necessarily a good taste, but it was a taste after a day and a half of tasting nothing at all. By all accounts it smelled rather hideous, too.
But did it work? I sipped it slowly — I can’t take big sips, because then I can’t breathe — while watching “Downton Abbey” (speaking of which: Tears. Big, ugly tears. That’s all I’ll say about that,) and by bedtime there was no noticeable difference. I’ll let you know later if it turns out that the vinegar concoction is indeed a wonderment. I hope it is, because I’d like to be able to taste some of this week’s meals, which shall be as follows.
- Monday: Chicken with Cider and Bacon Sauce
- My fascination with Chicken and a Pan Sauce continues.
- Tuesday: Baked potato soup
- I’ve also been making soup once a week for the past several. It’s been so cold and rainy lately, this one sounded like it would hit the spot.
- Wednesday: Cheeseburgers
- I think cheeseburgers have become Pete’s favorite food.
- Thursday: Leftovers
- I don’t think I’ll want a leftover cheeseburger, but leftover soup will be just fine.
- Friday: Pizza
