The road to dinner is paved with meal plans

The inimitable Jasmine Banks frequently asks people to share their Intentions For The Week on Facebook, and then on Friday she follows up with a “How’d You Do?” I very rarely (if ever) join in the conversation — because of fear of failure and all that — but I always enjoy reading other people’s goals and successes. I don’t know if I’ll join in on Jasmine’s thing this week, but I thought I’d jot a few Intentions down here just to see if it encourages me to go forth and accomplish.

Intentions, Best-Laid Plans and So Forth

  • Floss every day this week. I had a pretty solid flossing game going for awhile, but I’ve slacked off. The morning floss propels me to achieve more in a day, I think. That sounds really dumb when I write it out, but it’s true.
  • Keep notes on our homeschooling activities so I can actually write a post about it for Friday.
  • Make/eat the following meals for dinner.
    Monday: BLAs and french fries
Bacon and avocado make everything better.

    Tuesday: Chicken tenders
    Cracker Barrel style!

    Wednesday: Fried chicken
Pete has been asking if we could go to our local fried-chicken emporium for about a month now. He’ll be happy Wednesday night.

    Thursday: Chicken tacos
All hail the slow cooker. Especially on the weeks when we have soccer carpool duty.

    Friday: Pizza
Since we’re eating out on Wednesday, it’ll be homemade.

Right now I intend to eat a banana whilst trying not to imagine it’s chock-full of baby spiders. (As if I didn’t already loathe bananas enough.)

Do you find it helpful to set weekly goals? What’re you aiming for this week?

  • That time I tried a sample just to be polite and it turned out great

I don’t normally try meaty samples at the grocery store — I reserve my sampling for sugar-based items — but Pete likes to try a bit of everything on offer. So we stopped to see what was percolating away in the CrockPots. It smelled great, and it looked pretty good. Pete didn’t think so, though; he took one look at it and said “No thank you.”

But the lady had already handed me the sample. And then I noticed that she looked a lot like the lady on the jar. Her name tag said “Lavanya.” And the jar said “Lavanya.”

I was beginning to put two and two together.

    “Is this you?” I asked.

“Yes,” she said, “it is! It’s my family’s business.”

I couldn’t throw away the nice lady’s sample right in front of her, so I took a small bite. And then I ate the rest, because it was delicious.

(Thanks, Pete, for deciding you didn’t want to try that sample. Oh, and guess what? You’ll be trying it on Wednesday! Ha ha!)

    Monday: Spaghetti
With meatballs? Without meatballs? Who knows! It’s super-exciting around here.

    Tuesday: DIY Crunchwraps
    Because Rockford loves them.

    Wednesday: Lavanya’s coconut curry chicken
I am really, really looking forward to dinner on Wednesday.

    Thursday: Breakfast for dinner
Thursday’s going to be a busy day, and the kids are always in favor of breakfast. It’ll be either eggs or pancakes.

    Friday: Pizza
We might order in this week. We shall see.

A menu plan for our first week of school

Poppy turned 9 on Friday, and we spent eight hours at a water park. I got my feet tangled in my purse and fell out of the car onto the sidewalk, and I got my first legitimate hug from my 11-month-old nephew. Take the good, take the bad, take it all and there you have an overall pretty great weekend. (Water park fun + baby hugs > dinged-up knees.)

    Monday: Breakfast for dinner
It’s been too long since I’ve microwaved veggie sausages.

    Tuesday: Sweet and sour chicken
I forgot to thaw the chicken for last week’s stir fry. Hopefully I’ll remember this week.

    Wednesday: Hanburgers
It’s Pete’s Choice this week. He usually asks for cheeseburgers, but this week he requested the “Star Wars” version. Complete with Jabba Jiggle Jell-O.

    Thursday: Poppyseed Chicken
We enjoyed this so much the last time I made it that I set it to repeat on my calendar. I’m looking forward to Thursday.

    Friday: ???
We’ve been trying to get to my in-laws’ house for the last several Fridays for dinner, but the fates have not been in our favor. Maybe this week no one will be ill or otherwise indisposed.

Today was our first day of school. Poppy started fourth grade, and Pete started first. Our co-op, which hasn’t started yet, meets on Mondays, so Monday is our lightest day of at-home assignments. Which means the kids were finished with their first day of school by 10:15 this morning. Now they’re playing video games, and we’re going to the playground after I hit the “publish” button here. Not a bad way to start the year.

What’re you up to this week?
